What is a police dog commissioned by the Akita Prefectural Police?
The Akita Prefectural Police commission excellent dogs that have been raised and trained in homes to serve as police dogs.
The main activity of commissioned police dogs is to be dispatched at the request of the police to search for missing persons and other related activities.
To work as a commissioned police dog, one must pass a selection test organized by the Akita Prefectural Police.
Previously, the Akita Prefectural Police commissioned police dogs were limited to seven breeds, including German Shepherds. However, starting last year, the breed restrictions were removed, and the police are now recruiting excellent dogs, including small breeds.

Eligibility
1. Individuals residing in Akita Prefecture who are able to respond to police dispatch requests (18 years of age or older)
2. Those who comply with the Rabies Prevention Act and other related laws and regulations concerning pet ownership.
Review items
1. Following the Footprints
Dogs are used to track the scent of people who have walked along designated courses on paved surfaces and grassy areas, and are evaluated on their ability to find any belongings left behind or locate the person who walked the course.
2. Odor sorting
Five cloths, each with a different scent, are placed on a sorting table (one correct, four incorrect). The dogs are then judged on whether they can select and bring back the cloth with the correct scent after being exposed to it.
