Based on the lessons learned from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the Wide Area Emergency Relief Corps was established in June 1995 as a unit capable of responding quickly and broadly beyond the boundaries of prefectures, and having advanced rescue / rescue and self-reliance capabilities. It was established with about 4,000 members of riot police throughout the country. The squad is currently composed of a "security unit", a "traffic unit", and a "criminal unit". In the event of a large-scale disaster, it is dispatched to the affected area immediately to conduct disaster security activities.
The main duties of each unit are as follows.

  • "Security Unit" -Collects information on the status of the disaster, rescues and rescues victims, and provides evacuation guidance.
  • "Traffic unit" -Collects information on road conditions, secures emergency routes, guides traffic regulations and guides emergency vehicles.
  • "Criminal unit" -Performs autopsy of the deceased, hands over the corpse to the bereaved family, and provides safety information such as safety information.
